ESPN Gridiron Challenge: Week 1

Last season I finished in the 98.3 percentile.  The strategy was focused mainly on picking the players who would have the best overall season, and sticking with them every week.  The top players gain so much value throughout the season, that it doesn't make sense to try and swap them out to find the best match-ups.  This includes holding on to them through the bye weeks.

Given the expected variability with Kickers and Defenses year over year, I opt to go for the lowest value players here.  No different than picking them in the final couple of rounds of draft.  Ultimately with the Defense you can always find a somewhat decent match-up of a bad team playing an even worse offense.

Here is my week 1 ESPN Gridiron Challenge roster:

  2. QBs: Both should have strong opening weeks against pretty suspect defenses.

RBs: Can't go wrong with AP and I like McCoy to have a big season.

WRs: Johnson is a no brainer. I'm in a wait-and-see mode on where Welker ultimately ends up in that offense. He'll get his share, but I think his upside is pretty limited week in and week out, so I'd likely look elsewhere.

TE: If you want to spend $5 on a TE, I think Daniels is a better play against the Chargers. Gates in a new offense going against a Houston defense could be a tough matchup. If you're taking Graham, I think you're better off going after a sleeper TE like Jordan Cameron ($4.5), and using the extra $.5 to trade up McCoy and Welker for better options such as Spiller/Lynch or Fitzgerald/Cobb/VJax.

K and Def: I would likely avoid paying top dollar for either of these categories. Just like in regular fantasy, they can be hit or miss year over year, so I like to buy really low and find a good matchup. Last year's top and bottom kicker only had an average difference of 3.7pts/week. For me, that's not worth a $.5 price premium, when I might be able to put that into much better position players.

    Hope that helps.

    1. Note in TEs, that is if you're *NOT* taking Graham, I think you're better off with a sleeper TE.
